Glossary

Proliferation

A process during cellular development where the cell undergoes division and thus grows population. One "mother" cell grows and divides into two "daughter" cells.

Radial glia

A pivotal cell type, crucial in the development of the nervous system, from patterning to neuronal migration. They also act as precursors during neurogenesis.

Saltatory process

A process that involves a sudden change and is non-gradual.

Scaffold

A cellular structure which supports other cells, generally through cell adhesion, and helps them to stabilize or migrate.

Somal translocation

Precursor cells proliferate in the ventricular zone, and the early postmitotic cells migrate from the preplate. This migration is done by somal translocation. The neurons are bipolar and attach the leading edge to the pia. The soma (or body) is then transported to the pial surface by...

Stellate

Neurons and astrocytes with several dendrites radiating from the cell body giving them a star shaped appearance. They are usually inhibitory neurons found within the molecular layer of the cerebellum which synapse onto the dendritic arbors of Purkinje cells.

Stem cells

Cells having the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division and differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types. Two main types are – embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.
